Watch live: Beto O'Rourke holds rally in El Paso to compete with Trump
Former U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) planned a rally on his home turf of El Paso, Texas, on Monday night to coincide with an event President Donald Trump is holding the same night in the same city.
O'Rourke, who has said he will decide whether or not he's jumping into the 2020 presidential campaign at the end of the month, became a popular Democratic candidate during 2018 as he ran to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in an ultimately doomed, but nevertheless impressive, campaign. He cast himself as deeply opposed to the president's rhetoric on immigration.
El Paso is O'Rourke's hometown, and also the subject of some of Trump's major recent lies. The president claimed during his State of the Union that the city was deluged by violent crime until it built a border wall — in fact, it had an extremely low rate of crime before the fencing was built.
O'Rourke is scheduled to begin his rally at about 9 p.m. Eastern.
