In an era of bitter partisanship, Republicans and Democrats in Congress have reached a bipartisan compromise on border security that will avert another partial government shutdown if President Donald Trump agrees to it—and Trump has indicated that he will. Trump has publicly thanked fellow Republicans for their negotiating, but CNN is reporting that privately, the president is complaining that they were outmaneuvered by Democrats.

“I want to thank all Republicans for the work you have done in dealing with the Radical Left on Border Security,” Trump wrote in a February 12 tweet.

On February 14, Kevin Liptak and Kaitlan Collins of CNN reported that “privately, Trump has cast the GOP’s dealmaking efforts as inadequate and wondered why he, an experienced dealmaker, wasn’t consulted at more regular intervals as the two sides haggled over an agreement. The White House acted largely on the sidelines while congressional negotiators struck a deal.”

Trump, according to the CNN reporters, is disappointed because Republicans and Democrats in Congress “proceeded without direct involvement from the administration” even though they “did keep Trump’s aides updated as the talks progressed.”

One fear is that Trump will reject the deal and partially shut down the government again if he is attacked enough by the right-wing media. Far-right author Ann Coulter has denounced the compromise as a “Yellow New Deal,” meaning that Trump is “yellow” or cowardly if he agrees to it—and Fox News’ Sean Hannity, earlier this week, slammed it as a “garbage compromise.”

Trump’s aides, according to CNN, have been urging his allies in the right-wing media to spin the compromise as a win for the president so that he will sign it rather than shutting down the government again.

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, however, was anything but positive when, on Valentine’s Day 2019, she tweeted, “So the president has his hand forced to sign a 1,159 page bill that we KNOW is filled with amnesty, PORK and wiggle room? Total SCAM! @realDonaldTrump wasn't elected for this..... This bill must NOT be signed by @realDonaldTrump.”
