Trump looks ridiculous as he congratulates the wrong law enforcement agency for a drug bust at the border
On Thursday, the government announced that 254 pounds of fentanyl were seized from a hidden compartment of a truck loaded with cucumbers as it tried to pass through a border checkpoint at Nogales, Arizona.
The bust is the largest-ever for the synthetic opioid, which is responsible for the majority of opioid overdose deaths in the United States. They also uncovered 395 pounds of methamphetamine, for a total of $4.6 million in drugs.
President Donald Trump was quick to issue his congratulations to the Border Patrol for their service to the country:
Our great U.S. Border Patrol Agents made the biggest Fentanyl bust in our Country’s history. Thanks, as always, for a job well done!— Donald J. Trump (@Donald J. Trump) 1548980077.0
There's only one problem: the Border Patrol was not responsible for the drug bust. It was conducted by officers from the Office of Field Operations, another agency within Customs and Border Protection. Oops!
Imagine being the CBP Office of Field Operations officers who just made a record-setting drug bust -- and then the… https://t.co/sxFMdTdW2B— Garrett M. Graff (@Garrett M. Graff) 1548982414.0
Trump has long claimed that the situation at the Mexican border is a national security crisis — a claim disputed by his own intelligence chiefs. It was his basis for shutting down the government to extort funding for a border wall, and he is now threatening to do so again or declare a national emergency. But for someone so fixated on the border, the president does not seem to have the faintest idea what is actually going on down there. He has repeatedly claimed human traffickers bind and gag women with duct tape and load them into trucks to smuggle them over the border, and experts have no idea what he's talking about.
Today's drug bust was a positive development for securing the border. But, it is worth noting, no wall was necessary to do it — the smugglers tried to go through a port of entry and were stopped by federal officers. If Trump wants to keep Americans safe, he should take heed of what works, and stop chasing a nativist fantasy.
