Fox News host says Trump payoffs weren't campaign related because everyone already knew Trump was an adulterer
By now, President Donald Trump is heavily implicated in multiple schemes to illegally pay off women he slept with ahead of the 2016 presidential election, through both his personal attorney Michael Cohen and the National Enquirer, raising questions about whether the president himself directed an illegal campaign finance scheme.
But according to "Fox & Friends" host Brian Kilmeade, none of this is a legal problem for Trump because these aren't really campaign finance violations — there can't have been a campaign purpose to the hush payments, because everyone already knew Trump is a philandering billionaire!
"If anyone who got the New York Post and got Page Six knows that Donald Trump lived the life of a high-profile billionaire," said Kilmeade, "so, no, you wouldn't think one vote would be changed if people knew or didn't know that the president was having some type of relationship with these two women."
It may well be true that Trump's base wouldn't have abandoned him if they had known Trump slept with porn star Stormy Daniels or former Playboy Playmate Karen MacDougal. They certainly didn't abandon him after the story started to get out. But despite Trump's ever evolving denials, Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance fraud, and no one can seem to explain any alternative reason why Trump would want to pay off two former mistresses during election season.
If Cohen is truthful that he arranged the payment at Trump's request, then there is no good innocent explanation of Trump's behavior. But that will not stop the president's defenders at Fox News from trying to come up with one.
