Trump Makes Bizarre Claim that He's More Popular than Abraham Lincoln

The Right Wing

President Donald Trump has long been obsessed with polls and ratings, though his dismal approval numbers in office have unsurprisingly led him to largely stop mentioning the subject.

But on Thursday, Trump was back again touting his approval numbers — this time making the perplexing statement that he's more popular among Republicans than President Abraham Lincoln.

“You know, a poll just came out that I am the most popular person in the history of the Republican Party — 92 per cent," Trump told the British newspaper The Sun. "Beating Lincoln. I beat our Honest Abe."

As Business Insider's Josh Barro pointed out, this claim made no sense.

"Lincoln died a decade before the telephone was invented and about eight decades before presidential approval polling began," Barro said in a tweet. "As @mattklewis notes, George W Bush had 98% approval among Republicans in April 2002."

Perhaps Trump was thinking of a poll that asked Republicans to rank historical Republican presidents — but then the 92 percent figure seems erroneous. And a poll out this week found that Ronald Reagan is the most popular Republican president in respondents' lifetimes.

There may be some other bizarre explanation for Trump's comments — or he might have just made it up on the spot.
