'History Has Its Eyes on Us': James Comey Slams Republican Party and Weighs in on 2018 Elections

The Right Wing

Was anybody asking themselves: "How does James Comey think I should vote in the 2018 midterm elections?"

If somebody was wondering, the former FBI director made it clear Tuesday night on Twitter.

"This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that 'Ambition must ... counteract ambition,'" Comey wrote on Twitter. "All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences don’t matter right now. History has its eyes on us."

The remarks came as President Donald Trump continues to face blowback over his supplicatory press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

But it's not clear anyone is really looking to Comey for guidance on how to vote. Democrats were largely aggravated by his treatment of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign. Republicans have either rejected him for his criticism of Trump, or they agree with him with regard to Trump and thus are likely to oppose the present configuration of the party anyway.

Some independents might find Comey to be an honest broker, but if so, they already have plenty of reason to oppose the president and his party.

There might even be disadvantages in Comey's endorsement of Democrats, as it may make it easier to cast his criticism of the president in a partisan light.

Finally, his claim that "Policy differences don't matter right now" may sound like high-minded politics — and it may indeed by high-minded politics — but it is almost certainly bad politics. Most political observers agree that the majority of voters in 2018 won't be casting their ballots based on their feelings about Russia and Trump's treatment of Putin — they'll be voting based on who they think can improve their lives in concrete ways.

While it's commendable when people like Comey — a long-time Republican — put country over party, it's not clear they're actually doing the Democrats any favors.
