Former Trump Aide Mike Flynn Backs Out of Surreal Plan to Launch New Foreign Lobbying Firm After Pleading Guilty in Russia Probe

The Right Wing

It seemed like a joke, but it was real: Disgraced former national security adviser Michael Flynn was poised to join a brand new foreign lobbying firm, even as he has yet to be sentenced for lying to the FBI about his communications with Russia.

The move was announced Tuesday morning, but by early evening, reality apparently dawned on Flynn. The Wall Street Journal reported that Flynn's move to the lobbying firm Stonington Global LLC has been canceled.

In a statement to the Journal, Flynn's lawyers called the original announcement a "misunderstanding."

The firm will be run by partners Nick Muzin and Joseph Allaham.

Taking a position with a foreign lobbying firm raised eyebrows because of Flynn's deep involvement in the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and potential collusion with the Trump campaign, of which Flynn was a member.

Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia during President Donald Trump's transition. Flynn was also fired by Trump within a month of the inauguration, supposedly for lying to Vice President Mike Pence.

This federal charge alone would make his hiring by a foreign lobbying firm suspicious. But Flynn has also admitted to working as an unregistered foreign lobbyist for Turkey during the campaign, which should make him toxic to any PR-conscious lobbyists.

When the firm originally announced that Flynn would be joining, Allaham told the Journal of Flynn, "His experience speaks for itself."

Indeed, it does.
