'If People Are Offended, Then They Shouldn't Be': Corey Lewandowski Refuses to Apologize for Mocking Girl with Down Syndrome
CNN's Chris Cuomo on Thursday gave President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski a chance to apologize for mocking a girl with Down syndrome earlier in the week, but he couldn't manage a simple "I'm sorry."
"If people are offended, then shouldn't be," he said.
He tried to argue that he wasn't making fun of the girl but instead to mocking the Democratic strategist he had been arguing with.
It was that strategist, Zac Petkanas, who brought up the story of the girl who had been taken from her mother as a part of Trump's policy of separating immigrant families at the border. When Petkanas brought up the story, Lewandowski responded, "Womp, womp."
Speaking to Cuomo Thursday night, Lewandowski tried to claim that Democrats were using children to make political arguments. In fact, it was the Trump administration that explicitly tried to take children from their parents to deter future immigrants from trying to enter the country.
Amazingly, Lewandowski wants to argue that using their stories, to advocate on their behalf, is somehow illegitimate — a claim which is even more offensive than his childish sound effects.
Lewandowski also revealed on Thursday he is completely ignorant on other matters. He claimed, for instance, that the United States grants over 1 million asylum claims a year. It's not clear where he got that number, but the Department of Homeland Security's report for 2016, its most recent data on the topic, says it accepted about 20,000 asylum claims that year — nowhere close to 1 million.
He also seems to think that Barack Obama was president in 2008. That's the year he was elected, but Obama wasn't inaugurated until 2009 — a fact you'd think a former presidential campaign manager would know off the top of his head.
