'It Doesn't Make Any Sense': Rep. Ted Lieu Explains Why Trump's Cruel Policy of Tearing Immigrant Kids from Families Is So Repugnant

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) explained Wednesday night why — despite President Donald Trump's false claims — it is the current administration's repugnant choices that have led to the cruel separation of children from their families as they cross the border, even, in many cases, when they come legally.

"When these people present themselves in these interviews, about 76 percent, according to the latest data, have a credible fear during their interviews of going back to their countries," Lieu said on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show." "That means they can file an asylum claim. And under the Obama administration, they would let the asylum claim go forward before they would do any prosecutions."

Since applying for asylum, and becoming an asylee, is a form of legal immigration, this means that Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions' brutal policy of breaking apart families applies even to people who come to the United States without breaking any laws.

People seeking asylum come from desperate conditions and face legitimate threats of violence back home, which only compounds the injustice of the family separations that the U.S. is now imposing upon them. But even those without claims meeting the official asylum guideline often come to the United States out of serious need, and the policy remains unnecessary and abominable in these cases.

"Attorney General Jeff Sessions ... is prosecuting every single person, even if they have a legitimate asylum claim. That's what's causing all these separations, and that needs to be reversed because it doesn't make any sense," Lieu said.
