‘Disgusting': The View Rips Conservative for Claiming the Real Problem with White House Aide's McCain Joke Is ‘Leaks'
The cast of “The View” on Monday defended co-host Meghan McCain and her dad, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), after the White House refused to apologize for a staffer’s remark about the ailing Arizona senator.
As co-host Whoopi Goldberg explained, during the White House press briefing on Friday, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to comment on the internal meeting where Kelly Sadler, the special assistant to President Donald Trump, said McCain is “dying anyway.”
Conservative Matt Schlapp—who made headlines last month after he and his wife stormed out the White House Press Correspondents’ Dinner during Michelle Wolf’s monologue only to attend WHCA after parties later that evening—defended Sadler on Monday, insisting White House leaks are a “bigger” problem than the aide’s remarks.
“The bigger issue the White House has is that they can’t have confidential meetings without people on their own staff leaking it,” Schlapp said. “And that is a mortal threat to the success of this agenda.”
Speaking about the administration's refusal to condemn Sadler's remark, Sunny Hostin described the White House as "complicit."
“We need to call [Matt Schlapp] out because he’s supposed to be—he’s a Notre Dame Catholic, he graduated from my alma mater, I spent a lot of time with him at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. He and his wife walked out because they were so freaking offended. Well if you were so offended by that, Matt Schlapp and your wife? Why were you not offended by what was said? Disgusting.”
Goldberg reminded the White House that it’s hardly a rarity for staffers to leak. “You been leaking since you got in,” Goldberg said. “It shouldn’t be a surprise, but what it should be is: shame on ya’ll.”
