Trump Attacks Special Counsel and Praises the Ridiculous House Intelligence Report in Late Night Tweet
Even as the White House and Republicans continue to insist that there's no reason to think President Donald Trump intends to fire special counsel Robert Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the commander-in-chief took to Twitter Friday night to call the Russia investigation a "hoax" and to say the Mueller should never have been appointed.
"House Intelligence Committee rules that there was NO COLLUSION between the Trump Campaign and Russia," Trump said in a tweet. "As I have been saying all along, it is all a big Hoax by the Democrats based on payments and lies. There should never have been a Special Councel appointed. Witch Hunt!"
In addition to proving that the president still has no idea how to spell "counsel," the tweet offers more evidence that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's assertions that Trump will not try to fire Mueller are completely erroneous. If the president truly believes that Mueller shouldn't have been appointed, it's natural to assume Trump iss at least thinking about firing him.
Trump's tweet also referred to the House Intelligence Committee's report on its investigation into Russia interference in the 2016 election. The report, which was only approved by the Republicans on the committee, said it found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. But the Democrats on the committee have strongly objected to the report, saying it is biased and partisan, and they argue that the Republicans rushed the investigation to a close to protect the president.
Previous reporting suggested that even the Republicans were worried they had turned the whole affair into a partisan mess by closing the probe prematurely.
