Trump Called Roseanne Barr to Congratulate Her for Strong TV Ratings - Seriously
Donald Trump on Wednesday personally called supporter Roseanne Barr to congratulate her on her the “huge” ratings for the “Roseanne” revival, the New York Times reports.
The call came after “the show’s first episode averaged 18.2 million viewers,” according to the Times.
Barr’s character on “Roseanne” plays a supporter of the president; in its first return episode, the show grappled with the divide between Trump supporters and defenders of former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Barr told the New York Times on Tuesday that she “wanted to have that dialogue about families torn apart by the election and their political differences of opinion and how we handle it.”
In an interview with ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel last week, the late night host confronted Barr over her support for the president.
“I’m shocked, because I know you were a very socially liberal person in general,” Kimmel said.
“I’m still the same—you all moved,” Barr replied. “You all went so f*cking far out you lost everybody.”
In her interview with the Times published Tuesday, Barr insisted Trump shares the socially progressive views of her “Roseanne” character, including support same-sex marriage and abortion rights.
“I think he voices them quite well,” she argued.
As the Times reports, Trump has never publicly endorsed same-sex marriage. He also no longer supports abortion rights, despite having done so in the past.
