Rep. Ted Lieu Calls for Jared Kushner to Resign If New Report Is True

A leading Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee says White House senior adviser Jared Kushner must resign if Tuesday’s Washington Post report on foreign manipulation is true, during a Tuesday interview during “All In with Chris Hayes” on MSNBC

Congressman Ted Lieu (D-CA), a former military prosecutor who holds the rank of colonel in the reserves, blasted Kushner as a security risk.

“Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior advisor, in trouble tonight. The Washington Post reporting that officials from the UAE, China, Israel and Mexico all privately discussed ways to manipulate Kushner by taking advantage of his business arrangements, financial difficulties, and lack of foreign policy experience,” Hayes noted.

“And because of his lack of permanent security clearance, his inability to obtain it, Kushner just lost his access to highly classified information,” Hayes said. “Your reaction to the reporting from the Washington Post that foreign governments had identified Kushner as manipulatable due to his complex financial arrangements."

“If the Washington Post story is accurate, Jared Kushner needs to resign,” Rep. Leiu responded.

“His mounting business debts, his complex financial arrangements and the lies he’s told on his previous FS-86 security clearance forms make him a national security liability,” Lieu continued. “We cannot have a senior White House adviser that can be manipulated and leveraged by foreign powers, that’s completely unacceptable.”

“What do you think of him losing his clearance today, 14 months after he started?” Hayes asked.

“It is a good first step, but it also means he can no longer do his job,” Lieu explained. “The president has charged him with getting a Middle-East peace plan between Israel and Palestinians, he can’t do that if he doesn’t have access to the highest levels of intelligence about what these positions are of these various entities involved.”

“And the Israelis and Palestinians won’t be able to trust Jared Kushner, if they know that our own government can’t trust him fully,” Lieu continued.
