Joe Biden Shares Bipartisan Moment of Kindness with Meghan McCain Over Father's Cancer Fight
In a welcome moment of compassion amid the scorched-earth politics of 2017, former Vice President Joe Biden and The View co-host Meghan McCain held hands as Biden offered words of encouragement to the daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
Biden lost his son Beau to glioblastoma, the most aggressive type of brain cancer, in 2015. Senator McCain has the same form of brain cancer.
"I think about Beau almost every day and I was told—sorry—that this doesn't get easier, but that you cultivate the tools to work with this and to live with this," Meghan McCain said, fighting back tears. "I know you and your family have been through tragedy that I couldn't conceive of. What would you tell—it's not about me, it's about everyone with cancer."
As she began to weep, Biden switched his seat to sit nearer her and hold her hand.
"Look, one of the things that gave Beau courage, my word, was John [McCain]. Your dad, you may remember when you were a little kid. Your dad took care of my Beau," Biden said, before urging the younger McCain not to give up hope.
Biden, who led the "cancer moonshot" initiative during the administration of President Barack Obama, now co-chairs the Biden Cancer Initiative with his wife, Jill Biden.
