Donald Trump Vents on Twitter Following Ed Gillespie's Embarrassing Defeat

Media

Democrats had an edge going into the election to replace Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe. But few expected Democrat Ralph Northam to come out almost 10 points ahead of Republican Ed Gillespie.

The result was an obvious repudiation of President Donald Trump, as the candidate had embraced dark and divisive Trump-style campaigning.

While the candidate kept Trump at arm's length physically, Trump tweeted multiple times in support of Gillespie and recorded a glowing robocall urging Republicans to vote.

Immediately following the results, the president distanced himself from Gillespie by essentially insulting him on Twitter and claiming the candidate didn't adhere enough to his own values.

Republicans can expect this to be a preview of Trump's party loyalty going into the midterms.
