Unsurprisingly, President Donald Trump is ensnared in yet another scandal. This time around, Trump has lied about not one but two isolated phone conversations in a one-week span.

The Boy Scouts incident began with a speech Trump gave at the Boy Scouts of America's Jamboree, where he bragged about his “incredible” 2016 victory. When chief scout executive Michael Surbaugh apologized to scouts and family members who were offended by the “political rhetoric,” President Trump dropped an unsubstantiated claim in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that Surbaugh had called Trump and told him it was “the greatest speech that was ever made to them." Baffled by the lie, the Boy Scouts fired back, telling Time in a statement that they were unaware of any call and that “the [initial] message to the Scouting community speaks for itself.”

In another episode, Trump claimed that Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto called him to applaud the U.S. on an 80 percent stoppage of illegal immigration. Yet a statement by the Mexican Foreign Ministry says Nieto “has not recently spoken to President Donald Trump over the phone,” according to CBS

Trump’s long-lasting track record for faux-phone calls, and his tendency to bend the truth in general, points toward the likelihood that both incidents are plain old lies.

In the 1980s, Trump was notorious among reporters for returning phone calls posing as fictional spokesmen—"John Miller," "John Barron" and "John Baron," to name a few. In one interview from 1991, John Miller talked Trump up. Highlights of the interview include Miller explaining how Trump “treats everyone well,” and that “he’s got zero interest in Madonna,” as though she were drooling over him when he gave autographs to her dancers at "her" request.

Trump shows no sign of lightening up on the lies.
