Stephen Colbert Nails Trump's Spectacularly Incompetent Legal Team

Donald Trump made his inaugural visit to Camp David over the weekend, but he couldn't escape the glare of an ongoing probe into his administration's collusion with Russia in the 2016 election and his own possible obstruction of justice.

"Must have been nice for Trump to go out to the country... because last week, the Washington Post reported that the president was under investigation," "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert noted Monday.

“But, of course, that’s just speculation from a hostile newspaper using anonymous sources. So, naturally, Donald Trump did the smart thing and made no comment,” he added. “I’m just kidding. On Friday, he tweeted, ‘I am being investigated for firing the FBI director by the man who told me to fire the FBI director. Witch Hunt’.”

Trump's defensiveness has only further plunged the White House deeper into chaos, much to the alarm of Washington veterans on both sides of the aisle.

"Mr. President, you know the phrase 'you better lawyer up?'" Colbert asked incredulously. "It's short for 'you better get a lawyer and shut up.'"

After Trump's tweet confirming he was under investigation, his attorney Jay Sekulow tried and spectacularly failed to control the damage.

"Sekulow was on all the Sunday shows—CBS, CNN, NBC, Fox News, Animal Planet and the Handmaid's Tale," Colbert quipped. "And he had one clear message."

"The fact of the matter is the president has not been and is not under investigation," Sekulow told Fox News, before reversing course just a few minutes later.

"Sekuloooowwww!!!" Colbert exclaimed. "You had one job!"
