'Morning Joe' Crushes Newt Gingrich for Pushing 'Grotesque' Robert Mueller Conspiracy

News & Politics

Newt Gingrich on Thursday started tweeting out Alex Jones-style conspiracy theories about special counselor Robert Mueller by calling him the “ti[p (sic) of the deep state spear” that was “aimed at destroying or at a minimum undermining and crippling the Trump presidency.”

Gingrich’s claim echoes theories posited by pro-Trump conspiracy theorists that officials within the American “deep state” — namely, people working at the FBI, CIA, and the State Department — have been working behind the scenes to bring Trump down from the inside by leaking dirt about Trump’s ties to Russia.

Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough reacted with complete dismay to Gingrich’s conspiracy spouting, and called the former House speaker “grotesque” for attacking Mueller, whom he noted is an American hero.

“How dare you smear a man who served this country honorably for decades in both war and peace, winning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart,” Scarborough wrote. “Newt, whatever you think you’re getting in return for obsequiously sliming an American hero, I guarantee you it’s not worth it. Stop.”

Scarborough also slammed Gingrich for pushing such conspiracy theories just one day after an unhinged Bernie Sanders supporter shot five people — including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise — during a baseball practice.

“This is grotesque and fans the flames of rage among the unbalanced,” he wrote.
