Stephen Colbert on Trump's Unprecedented 2020 Ad Buy: 'Kill Me'

As if the 2016 campaign didn't feel long enough, President Trump just released his first reelection ad for 2020 this week.

"Kill me," "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert quipped.

As CNN noted, it's the earliest ad that has ever aired in a first term.

"Now, listen," continued Colbert. "I have a message for our president—no new elections until you finish your wars."

"Keep in mind," he then told the audience, before rolling a clip, "this is really a campaign ad... when I first saw this ad, I said, 'you have to be kidding.'"

The $1.5 million spot begins with a narrator stating opinion: "Donald Trump, sworn in as president 100 days ago. America has rarely seen such success."

However, the metrics that follow are clearly exaggerated: President Trump's jobs record is nowhere near half a million. And the "energy independence" myth of the Keystone Pipeline has long been debunked.

But perhaps the most telling part of the ad was its mention of Trump's tax plan, touted as "the biggest tax cut plan in history."

"See what he did there?" remarked Colbert in response. "They didn't say it was the biggest tax cut in history. They said it was the biggest tax cut 'plan' in history. Anyone can do that."

"I plan to cut everyone's taxes to 0 percent," Colbert then announced. "There, now I, Stephen Colbert, have the biggest tax cut 'plan' in history."
