John Oliver Has Just One Question for Americans After Trump's Latest Spectacular Meltdown
Nearly four months into Trump's presidency, nothing surprises John Oliver anymore. Still, Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey was bizarre even by the standards of a White House in constant chaos.
“Do you remember normal weeks?" opened the "Last Week Tonight" host before diving into the big news of the week: Comey's abrupt dismissal, which appears to be the result of his refusal to pledge his loyalty to Donald Trump.
Trump's termination letter to Comey was "the equivalent of a breakup text reading, ‘While I greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate occasions that I was the most enthusiastic, dexterous, and intuitive lover you ever had, I nevertheless must terminate your position as my girlfriend, eggplant emoji," Oliver quipped.
According to the White House, Comey was fired late Tuesday on the recommendation of the deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein. But on Thursday, President Trump asserted in an NBC interview with Lester Holt that he had planned to fire Comey regardless.
“Trump is so desperate to appear dominant, he will rush to take the credit for anything, no matter how bad it is,” Oliver noted.
“When I decided to just do it, I said to myself, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story,'" Trump told Holt.
“What are you doing?" Oliver asked incredulously. "‘I was thinking of the Russia investigation when I fired Comey’ is the one thing that you are NOT supposed to say out loud.”
“It is too easy to point at Trump being crazy," concluded Oliver. "That’s what he does, that is not going to stop... The important question is, what do the rest of us do?”
