Stephen Colbert's Brilliant Takedown of Trump's Address Is Not to Be Missed
As President Trump strode toward the podium Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert couldn't help but wonder: "Any chance there's a mistake and Moonlight is the president?" the "Late Night" host asked, referencing Sunday night's infamous Oscar gaffe.
Colbert's play-by-play rundown of the much-anticipated event began with digs at VP Mike Pence and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who "immediately showed their commitment to fiscal responsibility" with matching outfits.
While the president, "spoke in uplifting terms," Colbert acknowledged Trump made no effort to mask his contempt for congressional Democrats, particularly House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
“Of course, Trump immediately boasted about his executive orders,” Colbert added, before playing a segment of Trump explaining his plan to rid the government of “nonessential" workers.
“Non-essential federal workers,” Colbert repeated. “So, Kellyanne Conway is out?”
