Jeff Bezos Just Surpassed Warren Buffet as the Second Richest Person on the Planet

With a net worth of $86B, Bill Gates remains the world's richest man. But according to Bloomberg's latest billionaire index released early Thursday, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has supplanted Warren Buffet as the planet's second wealthiest, worth an estimated $75.6 billion.

Bezos owns the Washington Post and the company Blue Origin, which aims to pioneer "space tourism."

"People say that the astronauts, those few people who have been lucky enough to go into space, say that when you see the thin limit of the Earth's atmosphere and see that view of the earth from space that it does change you," the CEO announced at an Aviation Week event earlier this month. "We hope to be able to provide a lot of people with that experience."

Bezos' plans aren't confined to space travel.

"We are hoping to partner with NASA on a program called 'Blue Moon' where we would provide a cargo delivery service to the surface of the moon with the intent, over time, of building a permanent inhabited human settlement," he said. "It's time for America to go back to the moon, and this time to stay."
