'How Dare You': Elijah Cummings Unloads on Maryland Governor During Rally Against Trumpcare
Ahead of Thursday's vote on the floor of the House, four Republican governors have penned a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, stating their opposition to the American Healthcare Act. Now Marylanders are demanding their governor, Larry Hogan, speak out as well.
"I think that we need to salute all of the governors across the land and the mayors who are standing up to speak out for their people but especially the GOP governor of Michigan (Rick Snyder), Ohio (John Kasich), Arkansas (Asa Hutchinson) and Nevada (Brian Sandoval)," Maryland Congressman Jaime Raskin told constituents at a rally held in Annapolis Monday.
"Let's show our appreciation for what they're doing because they are putting principle and people ahead of party," he added.
According to Bloomberg, the four governors "all run states that expanded Medicaid to people making as much as 138 percent of the federal poverty level."
They believe the states should continue to receive extra federal funding from Obamacare in either per-person or block grant form.
"Ultimately it comes down to our budget and our ability to ensure these individuals, so I think it's time we all join together, Governor Hogan, the congressional delegation and legislature to make sure that we are on record opposing anything that would diminish the Medicaid rolls in the state of Maryland," Michael Erin Busch, current Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, told The Real News Network.
More than a quarter of a million Marylanders will lose health coverage as a result of Obamacare's repeal, potentially costing the state billions.
"I was very disappointed to hear the governor's response," Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings said after Hogan dismissed the rally as "grandstanding."
"We met with the governor about a month ago. That wasn't grandstanding," Cummings noted. "We believe health care should be a right, so how dare you talk about 'grandstanding'!"
"We're talking about saving people's lives!" he exclaimed. "And I personally resent that!"
