Colbert Blasts GOP for Its Cruel Plan to Immediately Repeal Obamacare
"Late Show" host Stephen Colbert opened Wednesday night's show by joking about mounting another presidential run.
"I tell you, with a greeting like that, you make me want to run in 2020," he quipped before turning to the news of the day from Capitol Hill.Â
Just two weeks before Donald Trump's inauguration, Mike Pence rallied Republican members of Congress to at least look like they are planning an alternative to Obamacare, which they are intent on repealing.
"Republican members leaving the meeting with Pence said the gathering felt like a 'pep rally' but that there were not many policy details discussed," CNN reported, despite the repeal being called the new administration's "first order of business" by the VP-elect.Â
"Two, four, six, eight, make the poor self-medicate. Go f*ck yourselves," Colbert said in response to the report.Â
Obamacare was instrumental in bringing America's uninsured rate to an all-time low. The repeal would affect roughly 20 million people and neither President-elect Trump nor congressional Republicans have proposed anything resembling a replacement plan. During his presidential campaign, Trump vaguely promised to replace Obamacare with "something terrific." Yet he appeared painfully unaware of how the ACA worked even just two weeks before the election.Â
"Hey, guess who else was on Capitol Hill?" Colbert continued. "President Obama stopped by to meet with Democrats to rally them to defend Obamacare."Â
Obama's advice? "Don't rescue" Republicans.Â
"Don't help them fix Obamacare or change it or anything like that," Colbert reiterated.
"That's in the Hippocratic oath: First, do no harm. Second, hope the other doctor kills the patient. They get blamed and in two years, you regain control of the hospital," he joked.
Obama also told Democrats to begin calling the GOP's plan "Trumpcare."
"That will show him," Colbert remarked. "Because if there's one thing Donald Trump hates, it's putting his name on things."Â
