Watch: CNN's Van Jones Explains the Trump Phenomenon: 'This Was Whitelash'
Just before Donald Trump won the election, CNN's Van Jones had an emotional plea for his voters.
"There's another side of this. People have talked about a miracle," Van Jones said of Trump supporters. "'I'm hearing about a nightmare."
He then explained why it's so hard for some voters in America to be parents the night Donald Trump was elected president.
"You tell your kids, don't be a bully. You tell your kids, don't be a bigot. You tell your kids, do your homework and be prepared. And then you have this outcome," Van Jones stated somberly. "And you have people putting their children to bed tonight and they're afraid of breakfast."
Because come morning, how will parents explain the election to their children in light of the looming Trump presidency, Jones asked.
"I have Muslim friends who are texting me tonight saying, Should I leave the country? I [know] families of immigrants that are terrified tonight," Van Jones continued.
"This was many things. This was a rebellion against the elites, true, it was a complete reinvention of politics... that's true, but it was also something else," Van Jones said of Trump's unexpected victory. "We haven't talked about race: this was a whitelash—this was a whitelash against a changing country, it was a whitelash against a black president, in part, and that's the part where the pain comes," Van Jones explained.
