Cabinet of Horrors: Jerry Falwell Jr. Under Consideration for Secretary of Education
Liberty University President, Jerry Falwell Jr. is under consideration for Secretary of Education. Yes, the president of an Evangelical university, who believes that evolution is a lie, who is president of a university that was founded in opposition to school integration, may be dictating the educational agenda of America's public school children.
Falwell Jr. confirmed to the Associated Press on Friday that he had met with Trump at Trump Tower. Falwell told Virginia's Richmond Times-Dispatch last week that he's let the administration know that "one of my passions is reforming higher education and education in general." When pressed by other outlets, including the Associated Press, whether that role would be as Secretary of Education, Falwell would not, "confirm or deny whether he was being vetted as secretary of education, but says he will 'definitely play a role' in the administration.'"
Falwell Jr. was one of the first evangelical leaders to endorse Donald Trump, back on January 26th, just before the Iowa Caucuses. While other evangelicals were wondering whether to support the thrice-married candidate who bungled Bible verses on the campaign trail, Jerry Falwell Jr. happily fell into line, going so far as to speak at the Republican convention, and pulling an anti-Trump column from a Liberty University student newspaper.
He didn't care when evangelical women like Jen Hatmaker, who frequently speaks to stadiums packed with Christian women, took to social media to denounce Trump. Hatmaker further told the New York Times: “Trump has consistently normalized violence, sexual deviance, bigotry and hate speech. I wouldn’t accept this from my seventh-grade son, much less from a potential leader of the free world.”
After the infamous "grab them by the pussy" Access Hollywood tape, Falwell, Jr. defended Trump, saying "We’re all sinners, every one of us. We’ve all done things we wish we hadn’t."
Many of us foolishly hoped we'd never have to hear from the Falwells again after Jerry Sr. died. Instead, his spawn may be in charge of policies impacting our nation's youngest children.
