Ivanka Trump Releases Nauseatingly Retro Campaign Ad, Twitter Users Go to Town
In a blatant attempt to modify his poor poll numbers among women, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump unveiled a new ad featuring his favorite surrogate dream date, daughter Ivanka Trump.
In the ad, Ivanka—who’s been called the GOP nominee’s “secret weapon”—touts her father’s paid maternity leave plan while insisting “the most important job any woman can have is being a mother.”
That’s right: any woman.
Donald and Ivanka both faced criticism for the candidate’s maternity leave plan, which Ivanka said intends to “help mothers in recovery in the immediate aftermath of childbirth.” As critics note, that mission fails to include leave for fathers or LGBTQ parents, and serves to reinforce the notion that women are solely responsible for child rearing.
The ad also calls to mind some of Donald Trump’s own sentiments regarding childcare. In 2004, the businessman said pregnancy is “wonderful” for women, but an “inconvenience for businesses.”
A few months later in a 2005 interview, Trump mocked men who change diapers, insisting they act “like the wife.”
“There’s a lot of women out there that demand that the husband act like the wife and you know there’s a lot of husbands that listen to that," Trump said. "I’m really like a great father but certain things you do and certain things you don’t. It’s just not for me.”
Which is fine and dandy, because according to his daughter, the things Trump doesn’t want to do are the very same things that comprise the “most important job any woman can have.”
Not surprisingly, Twitter had some prime responses to the new Trump ads.
Was that Ivanka "most important job a woman can have is being a mother” ad supposed to appeal to women? ‘Cause I feel hella diminished here.— Kat Kinsman (@Kat Kinsman) 1475591408

As a mother and women Ivanka Trump should be ashamed of this #paidfamilyleave plan.— Alex Morash (@Alex Morash) 1473810968

Fascinating how she manages to be as anti-PC as her dad when it comes to talking about family. https://t.co/05dzLNyT0Y— Garance Franke-Ruta (@Garance Franke-Ruta) 1475588192
