Will Smith Explains Why Trump Is Horrible and 'Can't Be President'

Election '16

Donald Trump has said many, many horrible things about women. There is no accurate list of all the sexist and misogynist things he has said about women because the instant a list is published, Trump says a brand-new terrible thing, thus rendering said list out of date. The point is, just as he is totally awful about people of color, Muslims, immigrants, LGBT people, veterans, the disabled, people who’ve lost their children in wars, and human babies, he falls flat when it comes to women.

Enter Will Smith, who is apparently not a complete garbage human, and thus appalled by Trump’s remarks. The star, who appears in the upcoming movie Suicide Squad, spoke with Aussie outlet news.com.au, ostensibly about his new film. But when the discussion turned to the U.S. presidential election in general, and Trump in particular, Smith was forthcoming about seeing Trump as dangerous, divisive and unfit to lead.

“For a man to be able to publicly refer to a woman as a fat pig, that makes me teary. And for people to applaud, that is absolutely f**king insanity to me,” said Smith. “My grandmother would have smacked my teeth out of my head if I had referred to a woman as a fat pig. And I cannot understand how people can clap for that. It’s absolutely collective insanity. If one of my sons—I am getting furious just thinking about it—if one of my sons said that in a public place, they couldn’t even live in my house anymore.”

Smith went on to share how incredulous he is that Trump actually has a chance at the presidency, and that there are people who support him because, and not despite of, his many vitriolic remarks.

“For me, deep down in my heart, I believe that America won’t and we can’t [elect Mr. Trump],” Smith continued. “Of all the things he has said, and we could go through the laundry list, that was the one that was such an absolute illustration of a darkness of his soul. I just cannot figure out how people can clap for that.”

He pegged Trump’s scaremongering—on full display during his acceptance speech at the RNC—as an underlying reason for his electoral success. He also tied Trump’s rise to frightening far-right movements gaining ground around the world.

“I think as much as we want to believe that love is the greatest human motivator, it’s not. Fear is. Fear is the most dangerous and powerful motivator because when a human being gets scared, fight or flight kicks in,“ Smith said. “And there is this really separatist non-inclusive xenophobic, racist wave that is sweeping the globe that is making us pull apart farther [rather] than putting us together.”

Smith continued, “The importance of leaders is that they have to be level-headed, they have to be calm, because when people get scared, they lose their morality and that reptile mind takes over. It’s the type of thing that you see in all forms of nature, but our leaders can’t be that.”

“So, we are not even going to pretend it is going to happen,” Smith concluded. “I have faith in America. America has had really critical times, but the good [people] tend to make their way to the top.”
