WATCH: Samantha Bee Perfectly Sums up the Primary Election Season to Show Us 'What the F**k Happened'

Samantha Bee decided to take us for a stroll down memory lane last night to understand how we got where we are in this frightening election season. The perfectly titled segment name? “2016 Primaries: What the F**k Happened?”

Bee started with presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

“We got here because black people are allowed to vote,” Bee quickly summed up. “Moving on!”

On the Republican side, “When people of color tried to warn us that Trump’s 'Mexicans be rapin’!’ platform might resonate with white America, we set ‘em straight,” Bee said, cutting to a clip of Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison—who is African American and Muslim—on ABC News back in July 2015. Ellison issued a dire warning that Democrats should organize and vote because Trump might be the Republican candidate, a statement met with patronizing guffaws from host George Stephanopoulos and another panel member.

Hindsight, even of the most smug variety, is 20/20.

From there, Bee traces the trajectory of Republicans falling in line behind the Donald, from the early days when they pretended they’d take a principled stand against America’s flaxen-haired demagogue of the moment, “until God’s Fluffer”—a reference to Ted Cruz—“quit the race.”
