Gender Wage Gap Clock Tells Women When 79 Percent of the Day Is Over

The gender wage gap fluctuates and changes depending on age, skill set and industry, but across the board, on average, women make less than men. The most cited figure pegs women’s salaries at 79 percent of men’s, a number based on the mean of all American women’s pay compared with all American men’s pay. (For the most part, the numbers get more stark when you compare men’s salaries to women’s based on race.)


In response to the disparity, MTV’s Look Different and Party NY came up with the wage gap clock. This special timepiece takes the earnings gap into consideration, alerting women when to clock out based on the portion of the day they’re actually being paid for. So, if you’re being paid 55 percent or 60 percent of what men on average make, as Hispanic and African-American women are, respectively, an alarm goes off when that portion of your day is over.

A video offers more insight on how it works. “The 79 percent work clock reminds you and your co-workers of a simple fact,” a voiceover states. “After a certain point in time, women aren’t being paid. When a woman hears its chime, she might as well go home.”

Also, this is a bit of a joke in an effort at raising awareness. So while you can’t actually purchase the clocks as of now, Buzzfeed reports that a few well-known women such as Valerie Jarrett and Shonda Rhimes were sent prototypes (which raises its own questions about power and reward).
