Trump Says Women Who Get Illegal Abortions Should Face 'Some Kind of Punishment'

In Donald Trump’s America, there will be no reproductive justice and the state will mete out punishments to women who endure illegal abortions. That’s from the candidate himself, who expressed his thoughts during an interview with MSNBC's Chris Matthews. According to Trump, women who get abortions if the procedure is outlawed should have to face "some kind of punishment."

Bloomberg News published quotes from the upcoming broadcast, which includes the GOP frontrunner suggesting we return to the bad old days when back-alley abortions were a woman’s only option.

“Well, you go back to a position like they had where they would perhaps go to illegal places, but we have to ban it,” Trump actually said.

This is incredibly dangerous. Beyond dog whistles to sexism and misogyny, Trump’s words feed into the kind of hateful rhetoric the GOP uses to whip up the worst elements of the country. We can only expect that some of those elements will act violently, as a gunman did when he attacked a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood last year.

Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards—who has had to deal with rising Republican nuttery over family planning and reproductive rights over the past few years—took to Twitter to point out the insanity of Trump’s comments.

As did Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton:

The interview will air tonight on MSNBC.
