Anti-Choice Activists Vandalize Planned Parenthood in Columbus (VIDEO)

On Sunday night, vandals scrawled, “Satan den of babykillers God see alll Mark 9:14” in all caps on the outside of a Planned Parenthood in Columbus, Ohio. This attack from grammatically challenged defacers was one of many threats on the organization in recent months.

Campaigns against Planned Parenthood have intensified since July, when anti-choicers released a series of misleading undercover videos. The heavily edited videos featured actors hired by the Center for Medical Progress posing as representatives from a fake biotechnical company looking to purchase fetal tissue. Doctors from Planned Parenthood admitted to getting $30-$100 per patient to cover the cost of preserving and shipping the organs, which are donated with the patient’s consent. At the time there were only two Planned Parenthood centers in the country engaged in donating fetal tissue.

In July 2015, Planned Parenthood was cleared of all wrongdoing, and eventually announced it would stop accepting reimbursement for fetal tissue transport. Yet Republicans continue to use the video in their anti-choice rhetoric.

Former GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina said in a September debate, “I dare Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama to watch these tapes. Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking, while someone says, 'We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.'"

New Jersey governor Chris Christie attacked Planned Parenthood and the Democrats, saying, "Let's ask Hillary Clinton. She believes in the systematic murder of children in the womb to preserve their body parts in a way that maximizes their value for sale."

In a recent debate, Ted Cruz called Planned Parenthood an "ongoing criminal enterprise" and promised to defund Planned Parenthood even if it leads to a government shutdown. He invoked the graphic imagery of the videos and urged everyone to watch them, even after the conspirator behind the videos, David Daleiden, was indicted.

The video Fiorina was referring to turned out to be a completely different clip of a live fetus not being aborted.

Donald Trump is the most progressive on the issue of Planned Parenthood and women’s health, stating, "Millions of millions of women — cervical cancer, breast cancer — are helped by Planned Parenthood. I would defund it because I'm pro-life, but millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood." He also mentioned that abortions account for only 3 percent of the services at Planned Parenthood.

Since these videos were released and the election cycle began, threats against abortion clinics have increased. In October 2015, a Planned Parenthood in Los Angeles came under attack by arsonists. Then there was the shooting by Robert Lewis Dear in November 2015 in Colorado that left three people dead and nine injured. Vandals have targeted Planned Parenthood clinics in New Hampshire and Washington.

Violence against Planned Parenthood has been ongoing from its beginnings in 1916. Since 1977, there have been eight murders, 17 attempted murders, 42 bombings, 186 arsons and thousands of other vandalism incidents at Planned Parenthood clinics.

But violence against clinics that offer abortion services has spiked in recent months, and in particular against Planned Parenthood. Republicans continue to obsess over Planned Parenthood in the debates. In one September debate, the organization was mentioned 23 times, and abortion is a topic in nearly every debate.

Republicans deny there is a link between the attacks on Planned Parenthood and anti-abortion rhetoric. Ted Cruz blamed the Robert Lewis Dear murders on the suspect’s alleged gender identity crisis: “It’s also been reported that he was registered as an independent and a woman and transgendered leftist activist, if that’s what he is,” said Cruz.

But Dear wasn’t a “transgender leftist activist.” He delusionally mentioned “baby parts” as he was being arrested. And while members of the GOP have spoken out against such acts of domestic terrorism, specifically calling out Planned Parenthood for performing safe and legal abortions, they contribute to making the organization vulnerable to attacks.
