John Fetterman, the mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, is distinctive among politicians for his tattoos, his goatee, and the progressive policies that are helping to revive a town ravaged by poverty since the steel mills shut down in the 1970s.

Now he’s running for the Senate, and he’s released a new campaign ad denouncing the War on Drugs. Fetterman leads the viewer through a series of what look to be drug dens—but instead of vilifying users or even drugs, he attacks the injustice of decades of punitive measures.

“What would our country look like if 30 years ago we didn’t declare a War on Drugs,” he asks, “but we declared a War on Addiction, treating it like the medical condition that it is?’”

“How many millions of families’ lives would not have been damaged or destroyed by seeing their loved ones get sent away for years and years through mandatory sentencing?”

It’s a whole lot more imaginative than your typical Senate campaign.
