WATCH: Ted Cruz Promises to End the Age of the Gluten-Free Military

Yesterday in South Carolina, Ted Cruz suggested a policy goal he felt confident in his ability to tackle: ridding the military of political correctness. In an attempt to coax a critical voting bloc of veterans and members of the military in the buildup to Saturday’s Republican primary, Cruz offered one practical suggestion, CNN reported.

“The last thing any commander should need to worry about is the grades he is getting from some plush-bottomed Pentagon bureaucrat for political correctness or social experiments — or providing gluten-free MREs,” said Cruz, equating the presence of dietary-sensitive MREs (Meal, Ready-to-Eat) to the efficacy of the national military.

In fairness to Cruz, only about 1 percent of Americans actually suffer from celiac disease, the autoimmune disorder that makes a person intolerant to gluten, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation. In the absence of any further logic to ground his argument, though, Cruz evoked nostalgia to drive his point home.

"I am confident that if we put in the hard work we can, as Ronald Reagan did in the 1980s, rebuild our military so it will be so feared by our enemies and trusted by our allies that, God willing, we won't have to use it,” said Cruz, latching onto the conservative golden goose. "That is the essence of what President Reagan used to call 'peace through strength.'"
