Ben & Jerry’s Co-Founder Unveils New Flavor of Bernie-Inspired Ice Cream

Election '16

Ben Cohen, co-founder of the iconic Vermont ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s, unveiled a limited-edition flavor on Monday celebrating presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders.

"Nothing is so unstoppable as a flavor whose time has finally come," said Cohen, announcing the new flavor, Bernie’s Yearning.

The colorful container features an image of the senator and self-declared democratic socialist backed by a large crowd, with the White House visible in the distance. As the packaging explains, the composition of the ice cream illustrates the profound wealth inequalities that Sanders has vowed to tackle.

"The entire top of this pint is covered with a thick disc of solid chocolate," reads the flavor description on the container. "Underneath is mint ice cream. The chocolate disc represents the huge majority of economic gains that have gone to the top 1% since the end of the recession. Beneath it, the rest of us."

Cohen said in a short video that the “participatory” process of eating the ice cream is meant to mimic wealth redistribution. First you smash the chocolate, then you break it into pieces and mix it with the rest of the ice cream, he explained, adding: “Remember, you’re distributing the money to where it’s supposed to go.”

A longtime supporter of the candidate, Cohen said he decided to make Bernie’s Yearning in his kitchen after being repeatedly asked when there will be a Sanders flavor. He produced only 40 containers of the ice cream, donating 25 to the Sanders campaign.

The flavor is Cohen’s creation and not formally affiliated with Ben & Jerry’s, according to a statement on the Sanders campaign website, which features a contest to win one of the tubs.

The release of the flavor comes just days ahead of the Iowa caucus, slated for February 1.
