'It's Happening Too F**king Much': Larry Wilmore Addresses San Bernardino Shooting
"Nightly Show" host Larry Wilmore put jokes aside at the top of last night’s episode to discuss the San Bernardino shooting, which was still unfolding as the show was taping, and to send heartfelt regards to the victims. And also, to point out how out of control gun violence is in this country.
“This is really unacceptable,” said Wilmore, who pointed out that the latest mass shooting comes just days after the Planned Parenthood attack last week that left three dead and nine injured.
Calling the series of tragedies “overwhelming,” Wilmore continued, “It’s happening too fucking much, all right?”
Thanks in part to conservative resistance to even the most milquetoast gun control, this year has seen more mass shootings than actual days.
“Let me just see if I can put it in perspective for you,” said Wilmore. “There have been 355 mass shootings this year and we are only in calendar day 336. This has really got to stop.”
Wilmore then turned his attention to the 2014 Laquan McDonald shooting in Chicago and the fact that the video of the killing had been withheld by the police for 400 days. Using news footage, Wilmore notes that eight days after Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s re-election, the city council voted to give McDonald’s family $5 million, though the city was still mid-investigation and McDonald’s family hadn’t yet filed a wrongful death suit.
To make sense of it all, Wilmore visits "Corruption Junction," a sort of bizarro "Sesame Street" world where friendly puppets Winkles the Weasel and Jimmy the Crow and others help explain the ABCs of coverups.
