'See Something, Shoot Something': Larry Wilmore Points Out the Lunacy of America's Gun Culture
In a segment appropriately titled "Murica," "Nightly Show” host Larry Wilmore rounded up few more examples — just in case you weren’t already swayed by the astounding pile of evidence — that the nation’s obsession with guns has reached full-on insanity.
First he tackled the case of Tatiana Duva-Rodriguez, the Michigan woman who apparently thought she was being a good Samaritan by opening fire on two Home Depot shoplifters on the verge of escaping with their pilfered goods. Wilmore wondered why the woman hadn’t instead called 911 or written down the thieves’ license plate number.
“‘Cause this is ‘Murica,” Wilmore said, answering himself. “Guys: see something, shoot something!”
Duva-Rodriguez, who was sentenced to 18 months probation for the act, again made the news after telling reporters that her takeaway was to be a jerk in the future. “I tried to help,” Duva-Rodriguez said in a clip Wilmore aired during the segment. “And I learned my lesson that I will never help anybody again.”
Wilmore chastised the modern-day Annie Oakley for her petulance.
“It’s like bad cops who say, ‘You don’t want me to shoot unarmed black people? Fine! I won’t do my job then!’”
Later, he turned his attention to churches that have begun taking their congregants to shooting ranges.
“So this is how far the gun culture has gone — it’s gotta be in church now?” Wilmore said incredulously. “You know it’s a good day if Jesus didn’t have to use his AK.”
Good job squeezing an Ice Cube musical reference in there, Wilmore!
