The 100 Most Militarized Universities In America
Vice News has ranked the 100 most militarized universities in America, meaning the schools that have the most students who go on to be employed by intelligence agencies and that profit the most from the military-industrial complex.
The rankings, unsurprisingly, place the D.C. Metro area quite high. Of the top 10 universities listed, seven are within an hour and a half driving distance to the nation's capital.
The University of Maryland, which is a short Washington Metro train ride away from the Pentagon and State Department, sits at number one. It has received $117,491,000 in Department of Defense research funding and is the top site for intelligence employers among the 90,000 people Vice analyzed who have “worked in and around the intelligence community since 9/11.”
Proximity to D.C. is not the only factor at play. The University of Washington, ranked number 43, is also the ninth highest for national security funding, hosting a Navy-sponsored research laboratory and an Institute for National Security Education and Research sponsored by the Defense Intelligence Agency. It has also partnered with the FBI and been identified as one of the NSA's Intelligence Community Centers of Excellence.
