WATCH: College Student's Perfect Reaction to Bernie Sanders' Stance on Weed
On Wednesday, Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders declared his support for lifting federal constraints on pot. “In my view, the time is long overdue for us to remove the federal prohibition on marijuana,” Sanders said.
"In the year 2015, it is time for the federal government to allow states to go forward as they best choose," Sanders said at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, CNN reported. Sanders said pot businesses in states where the drug is legal should be allowed to operate without fear of a federal crackdown and that the monumental number of drug arrests is a sign of a broken criminal justice system.
Although Sanders' position is hardly controversial—at this point, almost 60 percent of Americans support legalizing pot—he's the first Democratic candidate to voice his support for ending the federal marijuana ban. At the last Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton said she supports medical pot and that she's open to studying the effects of legalization.
Unsurprisingly, progressive pot policy plays well with the college crowd. A YouTube user captured the moment a college student perked up at mention of weed.
