Ted Cruz Threatens to Assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader

At Friday morning's right-wing panderfest, also known as the "Value Voters Summit," Texas Senator Ted Cruz set the tone early by calling the president a communist, mocking recently lame-ducked Speaker of the House John Boehner, and threatening to kill Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“If you vote for Hillary you are voting for Iran to acquire nuclear weapons,” the senator said according to the Dallas Morning News. “If you vote for me, under no circumstances will Iran be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. And if the Ayatollah doesn’t understand that, we may have to help introduce him to his 72 virgins.”

This is in reference to the Islamophobic myth that when Muslims die committing acts of violence they get 72 virgins. This Koranic interpretation is not readily accepted among many Islamic scholars, nor has the Ayatollah ever mentioned any desire to die and be greeted by 72 virgins but the Value Voters summit is not the best forum for nuances in Islamic studies. The senator was just getting warmed up, however. In addition to threatening to murder the leader of another country, he needed to smear the leader of this one.

“Media all across the world are reporting on this historic meeting of the world’s most powerful communist — and the president of China,” Cruz "quipped" according to the Dallas Morning News. (It is widely accepted in far-right circles that President Obama is a communist or a closet communist.)

With Muslim-bashing and red-baiting out of the way, Cruz then went for the Tea Party hat-trick and punched right against Representative John Boehner.

“The country will be better served with a strong conservative speaker,” Cruz told reporters after his speech. “What I hope more than anything is that the next speaker demonstrates fidelity to the promises we make when we get elected."

Cruz joins a long list of American politicians threatening violence against Iran, most famously John McCain, who joked about bombing Iran to the tune of "Barbara Ann" in 2008. In 1953, the CIA helped orchestrate a coup to overthrow the president of Iran and in 1988 the U.S. downed Iran Air Flight 655 over the Persian Gulf, killing 290. The U.S. has yet to formally apologize for either incident.
