WATCH: John Oliver's Perfect Suggestion for What to Do With South Carolina's Confederate Flag
Leave it to a Brit to come up with the perfect solution for what America should do to make a gesture at dealing with its racist past (and present). In the wake of the mass shootings at a black South Carolina church last week, John Oliver discussed the fact that the Confederate flag flies over the state capitol on his Sunday night HBO show. The damn thing flies at full staff, 24/7. It can't be lowered no matter how many people get murdered.
"The real question is why is the flag flying at any staff?" Oliver said. “The Confederate flag is one of those things that should only be seen on T-shirts, belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world,” Oliver suggested.
Cut to South Carolina's Lindsey Graham basically admitting that the flag is a symbol of racism, yet he's not sure it should be taken down, although he thinks it can be done.
So does Oliver, and he gives an excellent suggestion for what should be done with it once it is taken down, forever.
