Morgan Freeman: 'Legalize Pot Across the Board!'

Personal Health

During a recent interview with the Daily Beast to discuss his new film 5 Flights Up, Morgan Freeman told the publication how marijuana has helped him to deal with pain he still struggles with after surviving a near-fatal car crash in Mississippi seven years ago.

Freeman was driving down a highway in 2008 when his car skidded off the road and flipped over several times. The Oscar-winning actor had to be rescued using the Jaws of Life before he was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Memphis. The accident left him with a shattered shoulder, arm and elbow. Doctors operated for four hours trying to repair damaged nerves in his arms. He still doesn’t have full use of his left hand and he wears a special glove to prevent blood pooling.

A longtime user of marijuana, Freeman had this to say about legalizing it.

“They used to say, You smoke that stuff, boy, you get hooked!” says a chuckling Freeman. “My first wife got me into it many years ago. How do I take it? However it comes! I’ll eat it, drink it, smoke it, snort it! This movement is really a long time coming, and it’s getting legs—longer legs. Now, the thrust is understanding that alcohol has no real medicinal use. Maybe if you have one drink it’ll quiet you down, but two or three and you’re fucked.”

Freeman pointed to his special glove during the interview and shared how marijuana has helped him.

“Marijuana has many useful uses,” he says. “I have fibromyalgia pain in this arm, and the only thing that offers any relief is marijuana. They’re talking about kids who have grand mal seizures, and they’ve discovered that marijuana eases that down to where these children can have a life. That right there, to me, says, ‘Legalize it across the board!’”

So far, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical or recreational use of marijuana but, according to the New York Times, state laws have often run in conflict with federal tax laws that catch growers by surprise.

That said, if nearly half of the union is blazing up, perhaps the rest of the nation will follow Freeman’s lead and light up with him.
