Florida Teacher Suspended For Calling Teenage Muslim Student 'Rag-Head Taliban'

In early February, a 14-year-old student at a Florida high school walked into class wearing a hoodie. As the class watched, his teacher, Maria Valdes, said, “Here comes the rag-head Taliban.” The student alleges that she followed up with, “OK Taliban, what is the answer?” and “Let's ask the Taliban.” She also reportedly referred to him on numerous occasions as a “terrorista.”

After the student's family filed a complaint, the Broward County school district responded with a fairly light sentence, choosing to suspend Valdes for five days and require her to take diversity classes.

The student's father is furious. “I'll keep sitting in their faces until they recognize what they've done,” he told the local news. “They have failed every teacher, parent, and child in this district.”
