WATCH: Rapper Common's Amazing Viral Golden Globes Speech
"Selma" not only earned "Best Original Song" honors at last nights Golden Globe Awards show last night, Common, one of the composers of the song, brought the house down with a powerful acceptance speech.Â
After taking the podium with John Legend, co-writer of the award-winning song "Glory," Common delivered a message for the ages. It was short and packed one hell of a punch:
I want to thank God and the Hollywood Foreign Press. The first day I stepped on the set of Selma, I began to think this was bigger than a movie. As I got to know people of the civil rights movement, I realized: I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote; I am the caring white supporter, killed on the front lines of freedom; I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand but was instead given a bullet; I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. Selma has awakened my humanity. And I thank you Ava [DuVernay, the film's director]. You are a superhero. You use the art to elevate us all — to bring us together.
The speech went viral and immediately spawned a couple of memes. This one:
