Fabulously Dressed San Francisco Activists Confront Big Fashion Over Its Role in Deforestation

Earlier Thursday morning, activists staged a protest in downtown San Francisco to call attention to forest destruction for fabric. Activists are visiting Fashion 15 companies throughout the city, demanding that companies get forest destruction out of their fabric.

Dressed as fashion models, and wielding toy chain saws, activists staged street theater events outside of Prada, Louis Vuitton, Victoria’s Secret, Forever 21 and Abercrombie & Fitch. Marching from store to store, a team of about 20 staged runway shows, did photo shoots, stickered clothing tags, and handed out information.

Each event created a spectacle for tourists and shoppers, with music, photographers, and a clear message: get forest destruction Out of Fashion. Strutting along a red carpet, models carried signs naming the Fashion 15 companies, and exposing their role in forest destruction for fashion apparel.

The event in San Francisco was far from the only one -- hundreds of activists across the country are taking action in their communities as well. Hundreds of activists are placing thousands of stickers on the clothing tags of the Fashion 15 as retailers enter the crucial holiday shopping season. These stickers will educate consumers about the forest destruction, human rights abuses, and climate impacts contained in fabrics like rayon, viscose, Tencel, lyocell and modal, and will serve as a clear message to retailers and manufacturers that customers demand products which are free of forest destruction.

Our Out of Fashion campaign is calling on fashion companies to trace their supply chains and adopt full forest footprint policies in order to ensure that no controversial fiber is making its way into their fabric. Your voice is crucial -- sign here to send a message to the Fashion 15: No forest destruction for fashion.
