There’s something wonderfully satisfying about watching Republicans try to appeal to new demographics while sticking to their core principles. Mostly because it’s completely impossible.

This week, House Speaker John Boehner went to California to raise money for Republican congressional candidate Carl DeMaio, who is openly gay. Pundits called the optics of having a senior Republican leader support a gay candidate a “powerful message.” But Stephen Colbert rightly put them in their place, saying “That powerful message? Please forget all of our previous messages.”

Just last year, Boehner went on the record with ABC News insisting that “marriage is the union of one man and one woman…I can’t imagine that that position would ever change.”

Colbert’s rebuke? “That’s what being straight is all about. You pick one position and stick to it for the rest of your life: face-to-face, lights on, no eye contact.”
