Pressure Grows for GoFundMe to Stop Its 'Support Officer Darren Wilson' Campaign
More than $400,000 has been raised on two separate GoFundMe pages for Darren Wilson, the officer who shot unarmed Michael Brown dead on Aug. 9, sparking sharp criticism of the online crowdfunding site.
To focus some of that outrage into getting GoFundMe to end the campaign, organizers at ColorOfChange.org have created a petition demanding that the site return all money donated to the officer because it "is profiting off racially-motivated donors, some of whom are celebrating the police killing of Michael Brown." Besides GoFundMe gets a 5 percent cut from donations Wilson's supporters raise--which many consider profiting from a black teenager's death.
Some of the comments on the first GoFundMe page were pretty vile.
Here are a few ColorOfChange.org caught before the comments section was shut down:
"Waste of good ammo. It's my privilege to buy you a replacement box.”
“I thank all Police…protecting normal Americans from aggressive and entitled primitive savages."
"Black people can be their own enemy and I am not white…He was shot 6 times cause the giant wouldn't stop or die. Evil people don't die quick”
“Let this ‘GoFundMe' serve as an example to all cops in America: The general public will support you, especially if you pull the trigger on violent criminal thugs.”
So far, more than 100,000 signatures have been collected in protest of the Wilson campaigns and organizers want to collect even more.
In an email to supporters, ColorOfChange.org said that it wants the petition to reach 400,000 signatures to keep the pressure on GoFundMe.
"Right now, GoFundMe is trying to figure out its next steps—how to respond to the tidal wave of criticism they’ve received online and through the media," the email read. "That’s why we need to keep the pressure up, and send a loud and clear message that profiting off Michael Brown’s death is not okay. Together, we can ensure that they make the right decision."
GoFundMe has not made any public statements since it removed the racist comments last week.
Michael Arceneaux, a columnist at NewsOne, asked why Wilson would need the money anyway.
"What exactly does Darren Wilson need money for? He’s on paid leave, and wherever he is, I presume it’s on the state’s dime," Arceneaux wrote. "After all, Darren Wilson was concealed long enough to get out of town before the national media arrived."
For now, Wilson seems to be sitting on a nice amount of money and all he had to do for it was kill a black teenager.
