Will the Wisconsin GOP Vote to Secede?

At the Wisconsin Republican Convention next month, committee members will vote on a question whether the state party should support secession. A party resolutions committee had earlier voted in favor of a proposal to the party platform that "supports legislation that upholds Wisconsin's right, under extreme circumstances, to secede."

This resolution is related to a “state sovereignty” resolution earlier approved by one of the state GOP's eight regional caucuses. Supporters of secession say that it would assert Wisconsin's 10th Amendment rights. The resolution also seeks to end all mandates that go "beyond the scope of the constitutionally delegated powers of the federal government."

Still, the Wisconsin's top GOP officials aren't buying in. They sought to kill the resolution committeee's proposal on April 5. The resolution now will be voted on by all delegates attending the Badger State's GOP convention, which begins May 2.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who is up for reelection this year and is touted as a GOP Presidential hopeful for 2016, has distanced himself from the resolution, saying, “"I don't think that one aligns with where most Republican officials are in the state of Wisconsin — certainly not with me."

Right Wing pundits, like Glenn Beck, have promoted secession movements in recent months. On Beck's website, The Blaze, it claims that there are more than 30 notable secession movements taking place in 27 states and a Texas secession movement has more than 40,000 signatures on WhiteHouse.gov's petition area.
