GOP Lobbyist Wants to Bar Gays From Playing Football

A GOP lobbyist wants a bill to bar gay people from playing football.  In the wake of college football star Michael Sam’s announcement that he was gay, lobbyist Jack Burkman is pushing for Republican lawmakers to sign on to his idea, according to the Huffington Post’s Sam Stein.

It has no chance of passing, given that President Obama would veto any bill.

“I see the society sliding in the wrong direction,” Burkman said.  “It is time for conservatives in Congress to step in and define morality for [the National Football League].” Stein reports that “Burkman expressed particular concern about the possibility of a gay man disrupting the delicate equilibrium of a locker room.”

Burkman’s bill comes weeks after Sam made headlines with his coming out statement.  If he is drafted in May, Sam will become the first openly gay professional football player.

Burkman also dismissed parallels between his proposal and professional baseball’s past policies enforcing racial segregation.

“This is not about bigotry. It is about common decency and civility. Society is moving to a point where we are going to have unisex bathrooms and the next generation thinks that is OK,” he explained.
