Can You Guess Which ‘Super-Fruit’ Could Solve The World Hunger Crisis?

A prickly, green, soccer-ball sized fruit that grows in tropical and subtropical regions may posess the ability to end world hunger according to its supporters, Huff Post reported.

The potential global life-saver is called, "breadfruit," and it tastes like, well, umm … bread.

Breadfruit grows in the world’s tallest trees in tropical regions like Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Samoa and has more potassium than 10 bananas combined, according to Maui Food.

Its proponents say it has the ability to help feed the world’s poorest because the trees are so easy to grow and thrive under vast ecological conditions, growing in areas that are home to 80 percent of the hungriest populations.

Various advocate groups, including the Global Breadfruit, the National Tropical Botanical Garden and the Breadfruit Institute, are working tirelessly to promote the super fruit in order to spread it to those places where famine is particularly high in the world.

These organizations are in the process of developing innovative propagation methods coupled with advanced map technology, which makes it possible to ship millions of breadfruit plants anywhere in the world.

“Every time we plant one of these trees, we’re reducing the susceptibility to famine and starvation in the country where the tree is going," Global Breadfruit spokesperson Josh Schneider said.

A breadfruit initiative will be kicked off in a two-day workshop later this month at the Northern Mariana Islands aimed at inviting farmers and anyone else interested in economic development to discuss new ways to grow, plant and export breadfruit trees, Saipan Tribute reported.
